Fall Out Boy- This Ain't A Scene, Its An Arms Race

Fall Out Boy- This Ain't A Scene, Its An Arms Race

Researching music videos, This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arm's Race by Fall Out Boy drew my attention.

Depth of field is used in this shot, the close-up shot of the phone is in focus and the background isn't this draws the attention of the viewers to the phone.

This is a medium shot, the location is in what looks like a school p.e hall at a dance. The cardboard make an interesting prop.
The band playing in the recording studio is a typical mise-en-scene which i have seen many times before, and furthermore the way the film is shot is very conventional.
The camera is held quite steady throughout, with mainly a range of mid shots and close-up shots of the band performing and the "shock and impressed reactions" of the other people watching in the studio.  You can see this shot below.

Depth of field is used in this close-up shot, making the subject in focus and the background out of focus. With his dark hair and dark background his the viewers attention is directly on his pale face because of the contrast.

This is a medium shot, it works well as it gives the audience a sight of the whole room and everything going on. Many props have been used like feathers, actors and band equipment to make this shot so effective.
You can instantly tell the location is at a funeral, this is because the priest, choir, people in black and the whole in the ground. The colours are all bright and clear, the choir stand out wearing a red and black gown.
A very shallow depth of field is used here, the priest is in focus while the background is out of focus. This makes him stand out as well as him contrasting against the green.

This shot is of the guitarist standing on the coffin, the camera has shot it looking up at the artist making him look important. I like the clear blue sky, and works well as he stands out in front of it.
Toward the end of the music video as he wakes up a black and white effect is used. This close-up shot works well, he is in focus, depth of field is used.

Feeder- Feeling The Moment

Feeder- Feeling The Moment

I like the way that the camera pans around the band, the short, fast shots keep the music video interesting. The Mise en scene used with the band playing on the roof top its different from most typical music videos.
The range of guitarist shots are effective. The brown colours of the guitar contrast with the black colour of his jacket and the dark background.

I think the animation in this video works well, animated leaves are flying around the screen and as the singer walks the blocks of white move with him, this works well as the viewers eyes are attracted to him as he contrasts with the white background.

The animation along the video i think also creates over powering effects which enhances the songs power itself, hitting the audience with creativity and smooth camera movements.

This medium shot of the band works well, the editing is effective with the fast rapid shots, and the animation gives the impression of fireworks in my opinion.

Noah And The Whale

Noah And The Whale

This is a close-up shot of a juke box. Having a shot of the juke box gives the viewers an insight to where the location held which is typically a bar/pub. Another reason for screen grabbing this shot is because i really liked the lighting and contrast created.

This is a medium shot, although looking boring and simple half a second after flashing lights are behind them and a girl is dancing, looking drunk and unstable, this adds a storyline to the music video. I also like the way the director has created a symetrical frame having both artists sitting in suits looking very similar and the dim lighting enhances this.

A blurry effect is used, i think this may be because it makes her not look like one of the band but just a character band members video. She is wearing a red tight, sexy dress, her hair is blond and curled and very much resembles Marilyn Monroe. This makes me think they have picked this actress and styled her to look like the famous icon because of the like '.. she's a rock and roll surviver..' in the song. Because of having the black background, attention is drawn the girl in this shot.

This medium shot is repeated throughout the music video with different members of the band each time. They are all dressed smartly in suits and by looking at other videos of theirs, it seems like it is their signature style. The viewers attention is drawn to the man in the middle as he is under some sort of light.

The light is one the lead singer, this draws the viewers attention to him, his appearance is smart and the black jumper he is wearing blends in with the background. His hair looks like it is in the style of the very famous singer Elvis Presley, this may relate again the '..rock and roll surviver..' lyrics. I also like the rustic american looking location.

Here you can see is another shot of the lead singer, having the camera at a low point makes him seem superior and important. He is holding a guitar which goes with the genre of the band which is indie folk. The location again is in a pub, the cheap tinsel coming down and the fairy lights gives a more original location than the typical modern locations in the current music videos at the moment.

This is the first shot of the band all together, here you can see they are on stage playing to a very small crowd. There is very little lighting which makes it difficult to see any detail in the shot.

Ed Sheeran- You Need Me, I Dont Need You

Ed Sheeran- You Need Me, I Dont Need You

I think what makes this video work is how different it is. The idea behind the video is very simple, a boy doing sign language to the song. The lights and the black and white effect work very well.

This is a medium shot, its only short but effective because the vocals haven't started yet so the main focus is on the the person playing the guitar to the tune.

Close-up shot of the guys hands moving, at first i thought he was just moving them to the beat and dancing along to the song but as you see more of him, you realise he is actually doing sign language.

The boy is looking directly into the camera, i think by doing this it makes the video more direct and effective.

This medium shot is interesting because there is no background so all the attention is drawn onto the artist. The spotlight is coming down on him here.

The light makes this long shot so effective, i like how she is central and how the lighting has created shadows.

Rihanna 'Whats My Name'

Rihanna 'Whats My Name'

I find this establishing shot interesting because the audience can see that the location and scenery continues out of the shot frame, yet it still focuses on a certain building. its a location shot as it allows the audience to become familiar where the shooting is taking place and helps to portray the genre of the video.

This depth of field shot is really effective as the foreground isnt in focus so your attention is on the figure. The mixture of colours are exsotic.

This is a behind the shoulder shot, this works well as you can see a clear view of Rihanna and the location but can still see the man figure. Rihanna is wearing a unique and high fashion outfit, this goes with the R&B genre of the song.

This is a close up shot, the background isn't in focus this draws the viewers attention to Rihanna who is in focus. Her vibrant red her stands out in contrast with the blurry background.

Another close-up shot is used here, the boy holds her hand showing history between them both.

A shot of milk dropping onto the floor, opening and spilling gives a more dramatic effect.

She is dancing through the street here, the choreography is fun and effective.

I love the light in this shot, the red colour makes this shot stand out. The medium/long shot introduces the audience to the band playing around.

I like the many different locations in this video, this is one of the last and i think it works as the green tissue paper makes the shot with rihanna more colourful, fun and interesting.

Mumford and Sons 'Little Lion Man'

Mumford and Sons 'Little Lion Man'

I like this video as i think the location is really effective although simple. The different angle shots make the video interesting and the fast cuts makes it effective and professional looking. I would like to used the idea for the lights in my video, maybe in a garden bbq scene.

The video starts of with a medium shot of a black room with two lights hanging down.

This next shot is a close-up shot of a guitar. The light in the background gives  the shot a misty effect.

Another close-up shot is shown here. The silhouette of the figure gives nice effect.

A new character is introduced here, more is shown in this medium shot. I like the background, and the simple props used. He wears a grey suite which blends in with the background the broken cello stands out.

The is a really nice behind shot, with the figure standing in the centre of the shot, and the light crossing over makes the location and shot more effective.

The whole band is shown for the first time here, a long shot gives you this,  using a long shot also shows the audience the location is placed in a hall where the band are on a stage.

A behind the shot is used again in this shot, the band are dancing around giving the video a more warm fun effect.

A close-up shot of the lead singer is shown, depth of field is used here making him in focus.

Alesha Dixon 'Breathe Slow'

Alesha Dixon 'Breathe Slow'

I have research this video as i like the shots wear she is dancing in the dance studio. I would like to include this in my own video. The black and white effect i think makes the video effective and am considering in using this effect in my video.

The video starts with a medium/long shot, this works because it shows the location. I like the black and white effect which makes the video different, and works with the narrative and locations in the video.

It is then followed by a close up shot of what is clear to be main character.

This next shot shows a different location, a dance studio. The simple background makes the figure stand out. Her costume is simple, vest and shorts.

A close up shot is used here.

Another close up shot is used here

I like the way she is looking directly at the camera in this shot, she is dancing in tune with the music which makes in look really effective.
A close up shot is yet again used, she is at a different location in a different costume.

The reflection in the mirror is effective.

This diner scene is simple but effective
This shot of her taking of her ring and placing it on the counter. This adds narrative to the video.

This is a close up shot of a ring, depth of field is used here.

There is a change of location, she is walking through broad way street.

This close up shot of her feet walking for behind.
